Mestre Deraldo Ferreira is Founder and Artistic Director of The Brazilian Cultural Center of New England, one of three Brazilian Cultural Points in the US, designated by then Brazilian Minister of Culture, Gilberto Gil. A Mestre (official master) of Capoeira Angola, Mestre Deraldo brings a 35-year tenure in Capoeira, Samba drumming and dancing, musical composition and choreography. Mestre Deraldo began studying Capoeira at the age of 14. He founded the Academy of Capoeira in his hometown of Santos, Sao Paulo, Brazil, and he became a certified Mestre of Capoeira in 1984. Deraldo studied Capoeira Angola with Grand Mestre João Pequeno de Pastinha, student of Grand Mestre Pastinha, the "father and protector of capoeira" from an early age in Brazil. Grand Mestre João Pequeno graduated Deraldo as a master of Capoeira Angola in 2004. In the 1990’s he founded the Brazilian music and dance ensemble Samba Tremeterra. Mestre Deraldo is a featured music and dance soloist with Osvaldo Golijov’s 'La Pasión Segun San Marcos' in running performances worldwide. He was one of the first to bring Capoeira and Brazilian samba to North America. Over the past 25 years, Mestre Deraldo has taught regular classes at Amherst College, Hampshire College, MIT, Smith College, Wellesley College, Wheaton College, numerous dance and music studios, Canada, and Italy.

Grand Mestre João Grande was born in 1933 in Itagi, Bahia. Grand Mestre Pastinha accepted João as a student at age 20, and made him a master in 1968. After Grand Mestre Pastinha passed in 1981, Grand Mestre João Grande stopped playing Capoeira. Persuaded by Mestre Moraes he returned in the mid-1980's. In 1989 Jelon Vieira invited him to the U.S. and he returned in 1990 to present Capoeira Angola in Atlanta and New York; he has been teaching in New York ever since. He received a Doctorate of Humane Letters from Upsala College in 1995, and the National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2001.

Mestre Laércio dos Anjos Borges was born in Salvador, Bahia, in 1966, and started learning Capoeira in 1978. Mestre Laércio is a founding member of the Grupo Filhos de Angola (1984) and the Associação Brasileira de Capoeira Angola (1991). He currently lives and teaches in Berlin and gives workshops throughout Europe. He is keenly dedicated to teaching the art, knowledge, philosophy and awareness of Capoeira Angola in Europe in a dynamic manner.

Mestre Pé de Chumbo, born in 1964 in Floresta Azul, Bahia, began practicing Capoeira at age 10. In 1981, he began training with Grand Mestres João Grande and Grand Mestre João Pequeno, who graduated him as a mestre. Mestre Pé de Chumbo continues to remain close to Grand Mestre João Pequeno (93 yrs old) and is committed to teaching the traditional Capoeira he learned under this great Capoeira Mestre. He has established schools in Brazil, Europe, Mexico, the U.S. and in Germany, where he now resides.

Contra-Mestre Iuri Santos grew up immersed in the rich Afro-Brazilian culture of Salvador, Bahia, where he learned the art of Capoeira Angola. In 1998, he moved to Indiana and founded North Star Capoeira. Iuri teaches Capoeira at Indiana University, IUPUI, in Bloomington and in Indianapolis.

Mestre Amen Santo, born and raised in Salvador, Bahia, is a mestre of Capoeira and master drummer and dance teacher. He began Capoeira with Mestre Waldemar da Paixão and Mestre Avila. In 1989 he founded the Brasil Brasil Cultural Center and the Capoeira Batuque Academy, in Los Angeles. He has been honored in the Martial Arts Hall of Fame, and as a pioneer by the World Sokeship Council.

Mestre Efraim Silva was born in 1964, in Guaruja, São Paulo. He learned Capoeira under Mestres Trindade and Humberto. He moved to the U.S. in 1989 and received a Master of Capoeira certificate from the São Paulo Federation of Capoeira in 1994. He teaches at Yale among other schools and is the Artistic Director of Afro-Brazilian Performing Arts of CT and Ginga Brasileira Dance Company.

Happy Birthday, M João Grande!

Today, January 15, is the birthday of Mestre João Grande, icon of Capoeira Angola and Brazilian culture the world over. Even in 1968 he was already cited as a significant figure in the Capoeira Angola community. In his book, Ensaio Sócio Etnografico Brazilian ethnologist Waldeloir Rego wrote about João Grande, among other capoeiras of the time, in the book’s chapter, “Famous Capoeiras and their Behaviour in the Social Community”.

João Grande (José Oliveira dos Santos) is the young capoeira who knows the most about tricks of attack and defense, which coupled with an extraordinary corporal flexibility, has turned him into one of the most agile capoeiras in Bahia. When he is playing, he is like a great dancer. Canjiquinha, for example, after making various eloquent references about João Grande, offered a typical poetic sentiment, “Foi Deus quem mandou João Grande jogar capoeira” (“It was God who called João Grande to play capoeira”)

Wonderful!

Happy birthday, Mestre!!

There will be a roda and party at Mestre’s space in New York City this Sunday. If you are in the area, don’t miss this great event.

Celebrating Capoeira in Washington, DC

We at 733 Euclid Street celebrate capoeira just about everyday of the week in DC, but on September 13, 2008, the Brazilian Embassy hosted an event in honor of capoeira's registration as an official cultural patrimony of Brazil in the capital of the United States of America, Washington, DC.

FICA-DC started the celebration early with a Friday night roda for Mestre João Grande who made the journey to DC with his student Bujão. The energy was very nice and we were really happy to welcome Mestre back to our school after nearly a decade since his last visit.

The embassy event was held at the City Museum in the heart of downtown DC. Hundreds of people came, capoeiristas as well as interested citizens. The event started with a lunch discussion about capoeira led by Mestre João Grande, Fred Abreu from the Insituto Jair Moura in Salvador, and Mestre Camisa from Abadá Capoeira. Fred Abreu talked about the history of capoeira, João Grande talked about his roots as a capoeirista, and Mestre Camisa talked about the recent history of capoeira and his travels.

Many capoeiristas came out to hear the discussion, watch a bit of the movie "Mestre Bimba, A Capoeira Illuminado", have some lunch, and play capoeira under the hot September sun. It was a fun roda, led by Mestre João Grande with Mestre Jurandir from FICA and Mestre Camisa. There were also many other Regional mestres, contramestres, and professors there. We did a joint Angola-Regional roda that lasted a few hours, and then a local all-women samba reggae drum ensemble got everyone dancing.

To close out our long and happy day, angoleiros and regionais sat down to dinner together in Adams Morgan.

The event was part of the Brazilian Embassy's release of its latest edition of the magazine, Texts from Brazil. This edition is devoted to capoeira. It is really excellent and beautifully put together, and yes, you will soon be seeing excerpts from the magazine on the blog, but in the meantime, it is also available for perusal in our archives.

Thanks everyone for participating!

History of the Academy of João Pequeno de Pastinha

This short history of Mestre João Pequeno's school in the Forte do Santo Antônio Alem do Carmo was published in June of this year in the Diário de São Jorge, based in the state of Goiás. You can read the whole thing (in Portuguese) here.

Inaugurated in 1982, following the death of Mestre Pastinha, the Academia de João Pequeno de Pastinha had a great influence on the renovation of the Historic Center of Salvador (Pelourinho)…

In the early 1980s, Capoeira Angola was practiced in only two or three academies in the city of Salvador. They were groups of resistance that committed themselves to the diffusion of a lifestyle philosophy and not simply the formation of “folkloric groups”… Few resisted the influence of the “sportization” and folklorization of Capoeira Angola. In this context, the Academia de João Pequeno de Pastinha was born.

Created to combat this tendency, the academy became an important element in the revitalization of Capoeira Angola, preserving the line of Pastinha. Mestre Pastinha himself legitimized João Pequeno to drive this process. “They [referring to João Pequeno and João Grande, his two contramestres at that time] will be the great capoeiristas of the future, and for this I worked and struggled with them and for them. They will be mestres, not professors of improvisation like some around here that only serve to destroy our beautiful tradition. I taught everything I know to these two guys, even the pulo de gato. Because of this, I have great hope for the future.” (Diário de Notícias 10/3/1970)

Please send us any memories, articles, interviews, or pictures of Mestre João Pequeno that you would like to share with the Capoeira Angola community upon Mestre's 90th birthday.
